Cocos Island: Coconuts, Coral, Crabs and Chickens !

Hills Hashers departed Perth on a Virgin plane for a week of Hashing and what a week it was ! ! !

Our schedule had three Official Hash runs…..

  1. South Island on Wednesday 23 March.

Not knowing what to expect, we boarded motorized canoes and headed from West Island to South Island. The run was set by Kelpie and Dasher and the trail was marked with old buoys with red ribbons hanging from coconut tree fronds. It wound its way through the coconut forest and along palm fringed beaches. All lovely. We cooled of in the lagoon with drinks and had a short circle (Oh how deceived we were !) We then returned to West Island  and had ANOTHER circle, where we had the pleasure of having :sleeves” placed on our arms for down-downs ! Mind you, Baileys was offered as well as many, many beers. Their circles went on for ever and ever !…….Dinner was spit roast beef, lamb and fish  and more beers !

  1. Direction Island Saturday 26 March.

We got the 9.30 ferry and arrived just as the sun came out for a perfect tropical beach day run. It was a 3/4 hour run along rough coral beaches and dark coconut groves. We had a drink stop along the way. Our new purple tops looked colorful against the green palms. We had a huge circle in the sea with floating eskys ! (Could get used to this !!!) Again alas, we had many, many down-downs and the beer just kept coming ! However, we now had the novelty drink of Baileys in marshmallow cups. ! ! Skippy in his wisdom, introduced them to ÍCING’ which was not in their usual repertoire however, it was more Hills Hashers who had to park their derrieres on the block of ice ! There was a chance of some snorkeling before the BBQ of sausages, steaks, patties and fish along with bread and salads

  1. West Island Trannies Beach Monday 28 March

This was the mother of all runs as it required us to  “Dress up”  and included bunny ears ! Everyone was kitted out in dress-up mode which made for some interesting moments ! Hills Hashers did not let the side down and were kitted out in some fancy gear ! Our bunny ears were decorated with frangipani flowers. The hare was Dosh and she had set a run by using blue strips of cloth hung in the palm trees. Again, there were some dark coconut grove tracks and beach walking, this time without the dreadful rough coral which was a bit like on our very gravelly paths in the Hills…treacherous ! On return to the circle which was quite long again with copious amounts of beers, we had the highlight of getting down-downs of Baileys in small chocolate Easter eggs YUMMO ! Dinner was another great BBQ.  We sang our Hills Hash song at the end and also, prepared a song for them as they didn’t have one. This was warmly welcomed but left them a bit bemused !

So there is a snapshot of the Hashing events on Cocos. We got to see some amazing sights both on and below the water so check out our photos

How Green is Your Irish ?

Stunning turn out for this auspicious occasion ! Most Hashers were resplendent in green to honour St Patrick’s Day ! ! ! The joint Hares were Leapfrog and Passiona who assured us that it was a short run so that we can gather to consume a meal and Guinness ! (Oh…. that’s two meals isn’t it ?)

Walkers set off along a pleasant bridle path with the runners up ahead dilly dallying around checks etc. The run was amongst some great shady bush tracks that had everyone saying what a pleasant evening this turned out to be after the heat haze of past weeks. Needless to say we all returned safely and had a few moments to refresh before the circle.

Despite there being a few usual and unusual short cutting b’s, we had a fun circle with green down-downs then on to the serious business of BBQ’s, salads and all sorts of dark liquids

Till next time

The Hot Run (again)

Only the very brave Hills Hashers turned up for the run this week as the weather was 40degrees + –  The road to the venue was very dry and dusty, wasn’t it Franga ? The illustrious GM Skippy was Hare and he mumbled some vague instructions as we set off that way >>>>>>> As it was a very hot day we thought, foolishly that it would be short and sweet, but it turned out to be more like long-ish and sweat-ish !!! The joy of the first 5 minutes walk was quickly observed to be quite a lot down hill so that only meant it would be a steep climb up on the way back. Groan ! The runners were heard in the distance with horn blowing and when our paths crossed, they emerged a bit hot and bothered as we all faced a jolly steep bit. After more groans they sped off (in different directions I believe) and after a few tumbles and flip overs (no one was hurt, just pride) arrived back for a sit down and a cool drink.

In the circle, there were a few down-downs for silliness, being a bit dyslexic and of course short cutting of which there was a fair bit ! There was a lovely moment when Pink Bits thought the weather had broken and it started to rain, alas it was just a beer shower ! ! !

Despite the weather, it was a very pretty run and well marked too.

Till next week

El Keeno’s Bush Bash into the Great Unknown !

Hashers gathered at the designated spot and it was a jolly good turnout again at Hills Hash. There was a bit of “put the orange foot in, put the orange foot out, in, out ……in, out,………Oh forget it…….everyone could see where we were ”

The GM asked the Hare, El Keeno, to gave out instructions but they  were sadly unheard, due to unnecessary chatter in the circle ! Get a grip GM….more control needed !

So, we took off,  runners and walkers on the same path till the walkers veered off on a tangent. Then again maybe not, as walkers were confronted by err….walkers coming from other direction…Hmm…something going on here ?! Runners in the meantime, charged through the bush in gay abandon as there was sooooo much abandon, bush tracks and new discoveries. (Or something like that !) On return, there was a conscientious person ticking off everyone who had returned safely and we all had. It was a fairly short run and the usual short-cutting b’s got their down-downs. This week’s drinks were brought to you by Hash Splash and were quite BLAH having just beer ? but actually,  NO …….beer and flat soda water…Say no more.  There was also a notable event ! A naming was held and now we have a “Belt Up” in our midst ! Congrats to Mike !

After the circle, Haberdash had a car boot sale and many t-shirts were purchased by keen new Hashers.

So till next week

P.S. Beware the Monk is cracking down on Hashers NOT wearing Hash gear….

TOM….A…TO’S ! (NOT !)

Really, when setting a run near a lovely lake, eg. Victoria, Superior, Argyle,  Leschenaultia, Capsicum, Pumpkin  or Cucumber, maybe let the Hashers ACTUALLY go around it a few times…  🙁

Oh well, so the Hashers mostly (more later!) arrived very, very early just because it was very, very far from the Hills which is a problem for lots of nervous Hills Folks. ( OMG I HAVE TO TRAVEL TO THE FLATS ! Food packs, weather report & RAC road alerts mandatory !) We had many returnees from last week which was just great as well as a Hasher newly arrived to Hills Hash from parts of deepest, darkest WA country !

The Hare gave us a great set of instructions….go that way..> .walkers and runners on same trail till they split..<   > .! ?  Off we went in the direction of roads and streets with the odd little strip of park here and there ! Eventually, we did manage to enjoy the balmy (barmy) afternoon in a multicultural setting which this park is famous for, and for a lot of good reasons. Really good facilities & how many councils are there who provide great water stations to fill up bottles, doggie bowls and have a surprise water jet to get you in the eye ? Loved it. !!!

Runners blamed each other for short-cutting, as well as arriving back from different directions and thisW applied to walkers as well. Did not matter though as we all had a good time. Well done to the Hares who were always making sure everyone was  ” ÖN TRAIL”  even if THEY had to shortcut !

At the circle there were the usual punishments administered by a really sore and  tired GPS !(He is a busy man !)  Also, it has to be noted that there was a bit of a problem with a TOM-TOM ! Was this fate.?..A couple of Hashers arrived 20 minutes too late for the run due to an un-helpful TOM-TOM ! (Who was the Hare again ?)

Lets not laugh (much) at this as it was a lovely run with a great group of eager sports persons ! We love our sport !

Till next weak !
